NAAUSA is the only organization whose principle purpose is to be an advocate for the concerns of Assistant United States Attorneys. NAAUSA's strength comes from the prestige of representing AUSAs and the number of dues-paying members. About 40 percent of criminal chiefs are members of NAAUSA. As a United States Attorney noted: "Every AUSA should be a member of NAAUSA - no one else in the Department, or EOUSA, has the time to be concerned about AUSAs." And with many, many applicatnts waiting to fill vacant AUSA positions, often at a lower salary, there is little incentive for the Department of Justice to support AUSA's. NAAUSAs objectives are often opposed by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL), whose members are called "Libertys Last Champions." NACDL has far more active members than NAAUSA and NACDL dues are $230 a year for members in private practice and $90 a year for full-time government employees. NAAUSAs dues are $143 a year for full-time government employees, $83.50 a year for AUSAs with less than five years of service as an AUSA (dues by payroll deduction only) and $25 a year for former AUSAs. AUSAs and former AUSAs are urged to complete the membership application and join NAAUSA now. Current members who wish to renew their annual membership dues can do so using the renewal form. Members who need to change their address can do so using the address form. |
