San Diego NAAUSA Delegate appointed US Magistrate

PRESS RELEASE

The United States District Court for the Southern District of California is pleased to announce the appointment of Magistrate Judge Andrew G. Schopler to the Court. Judge Schopler will fill the position left vacant recently when Judge Ruben B. Brooks took retired recall status. Chief Judge Barry Ted Moskowitz administered the oath of office to Judge Schopler on Friday, September 30, 2016. For the past twelve years, Judge Schopler has served as a federal prosecutor in our District and was recently awarded the 2016 national Director's Award for Superior Performance by an Assistant U.S. Attorney - Criminal Division. He is also a Captain and Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army National Guard. From 1998 to 2004, he worked in private practice in North Carolina, where he focused on criminal defense and complex civil litigation, and was named to the state's Capital Roster for capital murder cases. Before that, he served as an Assistant Public Defender in North Carolina. An active member of the local community, Judge Schopler served as Co- Chair of our District's Lawyer Representative Committee, Secretary and Executive Committee member of the Federal Bar Association's San Diego Chapter, a volunteer Judge Pro Tem in San Diego Superior Court, the District's Delegate to the National Association of Assistant U.S. Attorneys, and a Guest Instructor at the University of San Diego Law School. Judge Schopler graduated Dartmouth College in 1994 and Harvard Law School with honors in 1997.
