Investing in additional staffing for USAOs across the nation will provide additional necessary capacity for U.S. Attorneys prosecuting crime and enforcing the law across the nation.
This investment in AUSA capacity is important and reverses, but does not yet fully recover, a decline in the number of AUSAs recent years. In FY23 the department employed 6,393 AUSAs, dropping to 5,997 in FY24, dropping further to 5,727 AUSAs in FY25. The administration’s budget proposal would fund 6,144 AUSA positions across the nation, reversing this negative trend.1
